Researcher in English with a Specialization in English or American Literature
The Department of English comprises five specializations in both education and research: English Linguistics, English Literature, American Literature, Irish, and the Swedish Institute for North American Studies (SINAS). Research is carried out within all of these areas. We are now looking for a researcher in English with a specialization in English or American Literature.
Duties
The purpose of this position is to develop new research within English or American Literature. We welcome research ideas within any topic pertaining to English or American Literature, including cross- and multi-disciplinary research.
One aim of the position should be to generate concrete work on research initiation, such as applications for external research funding and/or the creation of research networks.
The position comprises 100% (that is, full-time) employment for a period of 6 months. The primary duty is research. Some administrative tasks may also be included.
The holder of the position is expected to take active part in the department’s regular activities on site in Uppsala. This includes participation in regular meetings and seminars at the workplace.
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for the position, the applicant must have a relevant doctoral degree in a humanities or social sciences discipline, and their proposed research must fall within English or American Literature.
Priority will be given to applicants who completed their doctoral degrees no more than five years before the application deadline. Advanced proficiency in English is a requirement for the position.
Assessment criteria for applicants who meet the eligibility requirements:
Among qualified applicants, special weight will be accorded to scholarly qualifications and to the quality of the research plan. When the research plan is assessed, the research project’s scholarly potential, originality, relevance, and feasibility will be taken into account. The relation between the project and the department’s research environment will also be considered.
Since the aim of the position is to initiate new research, applicants’ scholarly qualifications will be assessed primarily from a qualitative perspective. A quantitative advantage that is a result of a longer academic career should not be decisive.
All qualifications must be documented in such a way that both their scope and their quality can be assessed.
Period of employment
The period of employment is from 1 August 2026 to 31 January 2027.
Application procedure: All qualifications must be documented in such a way that both their scope and their quality can be assessed. Qualifications reached after the application deadline will not be taken into account. The application, which may be written in Swedish or English, must be submitted via Uppsala University’s digital recruitment system Varbi and should contain the following:
-
Cover letter (max. 1 page)
-
CV (max. 3 pages)
-
List of publications
-
Description of the research idea, including a plan for implementation (max. 3 pages)
-
Scholarly and educational publications relevant to the position (max. 3)
-
Diplomas, degree certificates, and other relevant documents
-
The recruitment committee may use interviews and references. Applicants should therefore submit a list of references (no more than 3) who can comment on the applicant’s professional competence and personal characteristics that bear on the position.
Two copies of any cited publications that are not available in digital format should be submitted to Uppsala University, Faculty of Languages, Box 256, 751 05 Uppsala, Sweden. Mark up the package with reference number UFV-PA 2026/1928.
