Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 46 000 students and 8 500 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
The position is within the Division of Communications Engineering at the Department of Electrical and Information Technology at The Faculty of Engineering (LTH), Lund University. The division has 8 senior researchers, around 20 doctoral students and a deep collaboration with industry. The division works within wireless communication in a wider sense and the activities span from communication theory to implementation of antenna structures.
As a doctoral student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.
As a doctoral student, you will be trained in a scientific approach. In short, you will be trained to think critically and analytically, to solve problems independently using the right methods, and to develop an awareness of research ethics. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work on projects, to develop your leadership and pedagogical skills. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by supervisors. Doctoral studies end with a thesis and a doctoral degree.

The subject of the position is design and analysis of future wireless systems, with a particular focus on 6G and distributed MIMO systems (D-MIMO). The research work includes algorithm development for distributed processing, synchronization and resource allocation in distributed MIMO systems, with energy efficiency and sustainability in mind. A world-leading software-defined D-MIMO testbed, developed at the department, is available for implementations, tests and measurements.
This position is part of NextG2Com – a Vinnova Competence Center coordinated by Lund University.
NextG2Com is a competence center focused on future advanced communication systems that integrate wireless communication technology and networks, software, data, and security through relevant application areas (advanced digitalization). In NextG2Com, Lund University collaborates with industry and public-sector actors with support from Vinnova. As a NextG2Com doctoral student, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with industry partners and other doctoral students within the center, participate in meetings, and engage in various center activities.
More about NextG2Com (nextg2com.lu.se).
The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses.
You will focus on theory, simulation and implementation aspects of D-MIMO, done alongside and in cooperation with other doctoral students and senior researchers focusing on, e.g., hardware implementation and channel measurements. This allows theoretical and simulation studies to be made highly relevant and have an impact on how future wireless systems are designed. Using the testbed, results can also be verified in a realistic real-time operation.
The duties also include participation in teaching and other departmental work (however, a maximum of 20% of working hours).
There will also be project meetings, joint projects and tight collaboration with partners and other doctoral students within NextG2Com.
To be eligible for admission and employment as a doctoral student, you must fulfil the requirements below.
A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if the applicant:
-
has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
-
has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
-
has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
A person meets the specific admission requirements for third cycle studies in Electrical Engineering if the applicant has:
-
at least 60 second-cycle credits in subjects of relevance to electrical engineering, or
-
a MSc in Engineering in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Mathematics, Nanoengineering, Engineering Physics or Information and Communication Engineering.
In order to complete the doctoral programme in question, the following are also required:
-
Good ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle research problems.
-
Good written and oral communication skills.
-
Good ability to cooperate.
-
Very good knowledge of English, spoken and written.
For the doctoral programme in question, the following are considered as other qualifications:
-
Experience from development of signal processing algorithms and/or optimization techniques.
-
A strong background in mathematics and stochastic processes/statistical signal processing.
-
Experience with mathematical modelling and analysis of wireless communication systems. This also includes experience of the software tools used, such as MATLAB or Python.
-
Experience from implementation aspects related to wireless systems, including both analogue and digital sub-systems.
