About the Team
The Content Platform domain is the backbone of Storytel, ingesting and processing all content from publishers, enriching it with metadata, and building systems that organize knowledge about creators and content. Over three million audiobooks, ebooks, and podcasts flow through our pipeline and are made available to other teams via APIs and event streams. We lean hard on AI and automation to scale this work, which means real, large-scale data, retrieval systems, and generative AI features, not AI as a buzzword.
We're also the team behind Storytel Pulse, our newly launched author-facing product. Pulse helps authors understand their audience and connect with them directly, surfacing clear insights into how their books are being listened to, rather than raw charts and numbers. It's built for real users to interact with, so it's where a good chunk of our frontend work lives.
About the Role
This is a great place to take the first real step in your engineering career, we're looking for someone with roughly 0–2 years of experience. You'll work alongside experienced colleagues who'll mentor you as you grow, contributing to both our modernisation journey and the day-to-day care of the existing platform.
The work is a genuine mix of backend, frontend and Data. Backend is the foundation, the pipelines, APIs, and event streams that move content through Storytel, but with Storytel Pulse in our domain, frontend is a growing part of the job. You'll get a broad view of how everything fits together, from the data layer all the way to what an author sees on screen.
AI is a core part of how this team works. Engineers across Storytel use tools like Claude Code daily, and we'd expect you to do the same, and we expect you to build AI into how you work from day one, to prototype fast, learn fast, and turn the strongest experiments into things that actually ship.
About You
We don't expect you to tick every box, we care far more about mindset, taste, and how fast you learn. That said, you'll likely recognize yourself in most of this:
You're AI native. You already use AI tools (Claude, Copilot, Cursor, or whatever you reach for) as a daily part of how you code, learn, and solve problems. You follow what's happening in the space, you have a feel for when to trust the output and when to verify it, and you can have a real conversation about prompting, tool use, and what these models are actually good at, without reaching for buzzwords.
You like to ship. We care less about years of experience and more about whether you can take a real problem and have something running quickly - you'd rather show working code than a perfect plan.
You have a foundation in backend development, ideally some exposure to Java, and you're eager to grow in a polyglot environment. Today we mostly maintain services in Java, with some in Golang, Kotlin, and C#.
You enjoy frontend work too, or you're keen to grow into it. Our frontend is JavaScript and React, and with Storytel Pulse in our domain, building things that authors actually use is a real part of the role, so you're comfortable working across the stack rather than staying in one lane.
You're curious about architecture, system design, data structures, and software engineering principles, and you want to learn how to apply them to build scalable, robust solutions.
A big plus: you're genuinely into data and retrieval. A lot of our work is large-scale metadata, search, and RAG, so if you light up at the idea of working with embeddings, retrieval pipelines, and getting AI systems to reason over real data, you'll find a lot to dig into here.
You have some familiarity with, or genuine curiosity about, running services in the cloud (we use Google Cloud Platform).
You enjoy working with product and business colleagues, and you want to learn how to turn a vague problem into software that people actually use.
Most importantly, if this sounds like the kind of environment where you'd love to learn and grow alongside a supportive team, don't hesitate to get in touch!
Please note the timeline: We will be gathering applications and will begin the selection process at the beginning of August.
At Storytel, we're a team of creative story lovers who thrive on collaboration and new ideas. Our workplace is friendly, dynamic, and full of opportunities to experiment and make an impact. We believe in trust, flat hierarchies, and empowering you to grow with us.
