The Department of Archaeology, Ancient History and Conservation is seeking to appoint an Associate Senior Lecturer in Archaeology, to be based at Campus Gotland in Visby. The position is part of a dynamic and expanding research environment with just under one hundred staff members across both Visby and Uppsala. The department comprises seven main subject areas offering education at undergraduate, Master’s, and doctoral level: Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Archaeology, Assyriology, Egyptology, Conservation, Osteology and Global Environmental History.
The department’s activities at Campus Gotland are currently in an expansive phase, with around thirty staff members working in Conservation, Archaeology, and Osteology. We now aim to further strengthen this environment through the recruitment of an Associate Senior Lecturer in Archaeology. In close collaboration with other colleagues, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to high-quality teaching at undergraduate and advanced level, course development, and pedagogical innovation. Through their research expertise and scholarly engagement, the candidate is expected to contribute to the strategic focus area Cultural Heritage at Uppsala University Campus Gotland by actively engaging with the research environment and contributing to interdisciplinary research that promotes interdisciplinary synergies and advances cultural heritage research.
The position of an Associate Senior Lecturer can be held for a maximum of four years, with the possibility of being considered for promotion to Senior Lecturer. The Associate Senior Lecturer is expected to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer towards the end of the four-year period. The criteria for promotion to Senior Lecturer are set out in Uppsala University’s Appointment Regulations and the Faculty of Arts' supplementary guidelines to the Appointment Regulations.
The duties of the position consists of teaching, research and administration in Archaeology. Teaching includes course responsibility, course administration and supervision. Teaching is conducted through lectures, seminars and practical work in the field at all levels. Parts of the teaching takes place via video link. The proportion of teaching, including course administration, amounts to a maximum of 50 percent.
The proportion of research amounts to at least 50 percent of the full-time position. The candidate’s own research is expected to strengthen and develop the department’s research profile in Archaeology, as well as the university-wide focus area of cultural heritage, in collaboration with the department’s other main subject areas. The duties also include actively applying for external research funding and thereby contribute to an increase of external research grants as well as to the increased recruitment of doctoral students and researchers at the department.
Additional duties may include various types of collegial assignments within the department or the university more broadly. Another important responsibility is to stay informed about developments within one’s own subject area and broader societal trends that are relevant to the work of the university.
Applicants are eligible for appointment as Associate Senior Lecturer in Archaeology if they hold a doctoral degree in Archaeology, or demonstrate equivalent scientific expertise, and have proven teaching expertise. The applicant’s scientific and teaching expertise must be relevant to the subject area and to the duties associated with the post.
Preference will be given to applicants who have been awarded a doctoral degree, or have acquired equivalent expertise, no more than seven years before the application deadline.
Applicants must have completed at least five weeks of relevant training in higher education teaching or have acquired equivalent knowledge through other means. Where special circumstances apply, this training may be undertaken within the first two years of employment. Eligibility to serve as a doctoral supervisor requires completion of supervisor training.
Applicants must demonstrate documented ability to teach and carry out administrative duties in both Swedish and English. Where special circumstances apply, candidates who are not yet able to teach and undertake administrative duties in Swedish will be expected to acquire this ability within two years.
In addition, as a general requirement for academic staff, applicants must demonstrate the personal qualities necessary to perform the role effectively, including flexibility, a strong sense of responsibility, the ability to collaborate, and the capacity to work independently.
In the selection of eligible applicants, weight will be assigned to scientific expertise and teaching expertise. The assessment of scientific expertise will be accorded particular weight. Administrative competence and the ability to engage in external collaboration will also be considered.
Scientific expertise refers to research achievements and qualifications. In the assessment of scientific expertise, primary emphasis will be placed on the quality of the research. The extent of research activities, particularly in terms of depth and breadth, will also be taken into consideration. Particular weight will be given to research achievements within Scandinavian and Northern European archaeology, as well as to experience of interdisciplinary research that promotes cross-disciplinary synergies.
Experience of excavation methodologies, field documentation, geographic information systems (GIS), digital archaeology, research infrastructures, and/or linked open data will be considered advantageous. An interest in methodological development in the study of material culture is also desirable.
Demonstrated ability to engage both within the academic community and with the wider society will be regarded as an asset.
Teaching expertise refers to educational and teaching achievements. In addition to academic merits, relevant educational and teaching experience acquired in other contexts—such as supervision, staff training, or mentoring programmes—may also be taken into account. In the assessment of teaching expertise, primary emphasis will be placed on pedagogical quality. The extent of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, will also be considered. Particular weight will be given to student-centred learning, the use of digital tools, teaching in laboratory settings, and group supervision.
Administrative competence and collaborative competence will also be taken into account. Administrative competence is demonstrated, for example, through the ability to plan, organise, and prioritise work effectively and appropriately, as well as the ability to set and meet deadlines. It also includes strategic planning of activities, the ability to manage resources in line with organisational priorities, and the capacity to work in a structured manner with a clear awareness of objectives and quality. Administrative competence further encompasses entrepreneurial skills.
Collaborative competence is demonstrated through the ability to plan, organise, and carry out engagement with the wider society. Examples include scholarly communication for non-specialist audiences, participation in public debate, and public lectures. It also includes the ability to translate knowledge exchange with external stakeholders into activities that contribute to the development and quality of education.
All qualifications must be documented in such a way as to enable an assessment of both their quality and scope.
In this recruitment, the university will primarily consider the candidate who, following an overall qualitative assessment of expertise and competence, is deemed to have the best potential to carry out and develop the duties in question and to contribute to the positive development of the organisation.
