Assignment description
The Assignment
We are looking for a highly experienced Senior R&D Controller for a consultant assignment in a complex, innovation-driven environment. This is a visible role with real influence, where you will support and challenge senior stakeholders to strengthen financial performance, transparency, and decision-making across the R&D portfolio.
This assignment is suited for a consultant who can quickly build trust, structure ambiguity, and deliver impact from day one. You will work at the intersection of R&D leadership, Finance, and operational teams, translating R&D activities into clear financial steering and actionable insights.
What You Will Deliver
- Financial steering of the R&D portfolio: ensuring transparency of cost drivers, run-rate vs. project spend, and overall performance against targets.
- Planning & forecasting leadership: driving robust forecasting, scenario planning, and resource/cost outlooks to support prioritization and trade-offs.
- Executive-level performance reporting: delivering concise insights to leadership, highlighting risks/opportunities and recommended actions (not just numbers).
- Investment and business case support: providing financial input to decision material, including prioritization discussions and follow-up on expected benefits.
- Governance and ways of working: strengthening financial routines, structures, and controls across R&D (e.g., cost allocation logic, data quality, KPI definitions).
- Business partnering at senior level: acting as a trusted advisor and “challenger” to managers and stakeholders—helping them take decisions with clarity and accountability.
- Cross-functional collaboration: connecting R&D, Finance and other functions to ensure alignment on financial flows, assumptions, and reporting logic.
- Continuous improvement: identifying and implementing smarter, more efficient approaches to analysis, reporting, and planning.
- Depending on scope, the role may also include collaboration with external customers/partners in relation to reporting, follow-up, and decision support.
Skill requirements
Required Competence
- A degree in Finance, Economics, Industrial Engineering or similar.
- Significant experience (typically 7+ years) in controlling/FP&A/business partnering in a complex environment (preferably project-based, industrial, tech, or R&D-intensive).
- Proven ability to work with senior stakeholders, influence decisions, and challenge constructively.
- Strong capability in financial analysis, forecasting, performance management, and translating operational reality into financial impact.
- Solid understanding of accounting principles and financial flows (and how they affect decision-making).
- Advanced Excel skills and strong systems understanding.
- Fluency in English, written and spoken.
Meriting
- Experience with SAP and/or Power BI (strong merit).
- Background from R&D controlling, project controlling or product development environments
Consultant Mindset
- Fast to understand new contexts and stakeholders
- Structured, pragmatic, and delivery-focused
- Comfortable driving discussions and establishing clarity where information is incomplete
- Able to work independently while building strong collaboration across functions
