Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre are looking for a Research Technician who will be responsible for the development and operation of various scientific instruments in our laboratories located at the Askö Laboratory, as well Stockholm University's (SU) research vessel R/V Electra.
The Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre serves as the hub for the University’s research on the Baltic Sea. Activities are carried out both within the Centre and in close collaboration with other departments. Through an interdisciplinary approach, we generate knowledge that supports government agencies and other societal stakeholders in their efforts to achieve sustainable management of the Baltic Sea environment.
An important part of our mission is to support marine research and education by providing advanced research infrastructure. At Askö Laboratory, located in the Trosa archipelago, researchers and students have had access to a field station and research vessels since the 1970s. Our largest research vessel, R/V Electra af Askö, is equipped with state-of-the-art marine instrumentation, enabling both research and education across a wide range of marine disciplines. The Baltic Sea Centre manages an extensive portfolio of scientific instruments that require continuous supervision, maintenance, and development. These instruments are used in research projects and include both portable field equipment and permanently installed systems, such as mass spectrometers as well as oceanographic and geophysical measurement systems.
The primary workplace is Askö Laboratory, located in the Trosa archipelago. However, the position will also involve occasional meetings at Stockholm University’s main campus with researchers and other technical specialists. At Askö, you will be part of a team that works closely together to meet the needs of a wide range of research projects and field courses.
The research technician's main duties will be:

to develop and maintain scientific equipment and electronic measurement instruments at the Askö Laboratory.

to develop and maintain scientific equipment and electronic measurement instruments on board R/V Electra.

to participate in national research cruises and support measurements (geophysical mapping as well as sediment, water column, and atmospheric measurements).
Responsibilities include the following:

In collaboration with the staff at Askö Laboratory and researchers and technicians at Stockholm University, oversee the operation, development, and maintenance of a range of scientific instruments and research systems, including: Geophysical survey systems aboard research vessels, such as multibeam echosounders, sub-bottom profilers, and fisheries echosounders; Oceanographic measurement systems, including CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) and ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) instruments; ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) systems; FlowCytoBot systems (automated flow cytometer and robotic microscope); Atmospheric measurement systems, including mass spectrometers.

Maintain and further develop the IT infrastructure aboard R/V Electra and other measurement platforms.

Play an active role in the transfer, storage, and management of scientific data within the Baltic Sea Centre’s databases, as well as in the documentation of data workflows and procedures.

Participate in the planning and execution of scientific cruises and field campaigns in collaboration with researchers and other technical staff.

Applicants must have an academic degree in engineering or a scientific education with technical competence that the employer can assess as equivalent.

At least 1-2 years of work experience in machinery/technology with practical experience in performing installations and repairs.

As a person, you work well in a team and independently, you are sociable, proactive and resourceful. You have a structured way of working. You are interested in technology and willing to learn new skills.

You have a positive and solution-oriented attitude and possess good ability to communicate both orally and in writing with researchers and other staff in both Swedish and English.

Experience and knowledge of software for research data collection and processing, as well as scripting/programming.

Experience with open science software and databases.

Experiences in education/work life that demonstrate a genuine interest in realizing the full potential of our instrument park and marine research infrastructure.

Experience in project management and working in scientific teams.

Experience in data collection within earth- and environmental sciences.

Boating experience; a Class VIII Shipmaster’s Certificate is desirable.
This is a full-time position within technical/administrative staff, with a six-month probationary period. Starting date as soon as possible or by agreement.
