Are you interested in exploring fundamental mechanisms in genome biology, with the support of skilled and supportive colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in a sustainable workforce and offers safe, favorable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a postdoctoral position at Uppsala University.
The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is organized into seven research programmes which all focus on different areas of cell and molecular biology: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Evolution, Molecular Systems Biology and Structural Biology. The scientific basis of what we do lies in biology, but our research overlaps with other areas such as medicine, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, engineering sciences and physics. In total, we are over 200 staff and ~60 PhD students. Please read more about the department’s work at https://icm.uu.se.
The Deindl lab offers a stimulating multidisciplinary environment where you will work closely with experts in biophysics, biochemistry, structural and molecular biology. Our overall mission is to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying genome-interacting processes using a highly multidisciplinary approach that combines structural biology, including cryo-electron microscopy, with advanced imaging, biophysical analysis, and biochemical reconstitution. For more information about the research in the Deindl laboratory, please visit http://www.deindl-lab.com/.
Project description
The postdoctoral researcher will investigate fundamental mechanisms that govern the organization and maintenance of chromatin. This project offers a unique opportunity to apply state-of-the-art cryo-electron microscopy, together with biochemical and biophysical approaches, to uncover how chromatin-associated molecular machines interact with, remodel, and regulate the genome. The successful candidate will work at the interface of structural biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry to address key questions in chromatin architecture and genome regulation.
The postdoctoral researcher will join a vibrant structural biology environment within the department, with excellent access to state-of-the-art cryo-EM facilities, technical expertise, and infrastructure.
Requirements
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a PhD in structural biology, biophysics, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related field. Applicants must have prior experience in structural biology, such as cryo-electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, integrative structural biology, or related approaches. The PhD degree must be obtained by the time the employment decision is made. In accordance with eligibility requirements, priority will be given to candidates who obtained their PhD no more than three years before the application deadline. The three-year period is calculated from the application deadline and may be extended in cases of documented special circumstances, including sick leave, parental leave, or duties in labour unions.
The candidate should be able to work independently and must have excellent proficiency in English, as the position is based in an international research environment. We value strong collaborative skills, self-motivation, scientific curiosity, and a genuine interest in basic research, particularly in addressing fundamental biological questions through structural, biochemical, and quantitative approaches.
Additional qualifications
Experience with cryo-electron microscopy, in vitro biochemical reconstitution, and biophysical analysis is highly valued. Experience with protein purification, protein-DNA complexes, chromatin or nucleosome-based systems, cryo-EM sample preparation, data processing, structure determination, or complementary biophysical methods will be considered an advantage.
About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of two years with the possibility to extend to three years according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date as soon as possible or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
