The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focusing on cancer, genetic and autoimmune diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby promote closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently organized in six research programs: Cancer Precision Medicine, Cancer Immunotherapy, Genomics and Neurobiology, Molecular Tools and Functional Genomics, Neuro-Oncology and Neurodegeneration and Vascular Biology. Departmental activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics at Uppsala University Hospital. The department has teaching assignments in several education programs, including Master Programs, at the Faculty of Medicine. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 550 million, out of which about two thirds derive from external funding. IGP has approximately 400 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 850 affiliated staff members. Responsibilities
The position as a Research Engineer involves the analysis of clinical and research samples using advanced molecular genetic methods, with a particular focus on long-read sequencing technologies such as Oxford Nanopore and/or PacBio, in combination with short-read next-generation sequencing (NGS). The role includes hands-on laboratory work, including DNA and RNA extraction, quality control procedures, and library preparation for sequencing. A key part of the work is the development, optimization, and validation of sequencing-based methods, including targeted approaches such as Cas9-based sequencing.
You will be expected to participate in experimental design, method development, and documentation, as well as contribute to the implementation of new diagnostic assays. The role involves close collaboration with bioinformaticians, physicians, and other researchers in both local and international partnerships.
Qualifications
Experience in method development and optimization of sequencing-based analyses is considered an advantage, as is experience with RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and transcriptomic methods. Previous work with targeted sequencing strategies, such as Cas9-based techniques, is also beneficial. Experience analyzing complex genomic regions, such as repetitive or difficult-to-sequence areas, is likewise valuable.
In addition, experience from clinically oriented research environments or projects involving advanced sequencing technologies is considered a merit.
Great importance is placed on personal suitability. The work requires attention to detail, initiative, and strong collaboration skills. You should thrive in a dynamic environment where new technologies are rapidly implemented and developed.
