The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.
At our research group, under the lead of Professor Samir El Andaloussi, we are at the forefront of cutting-edge research in drug delivery. We are seeking a motivated and passionate Research Student to join our innovative team. Our work focuses on advancing the use of extracellular vesicles in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.
Division
Department of Laboratory Medicine, Division of Biomolecular and Cellular Medicine (BCM)
The Biomolecular and Cellular Medicine is one of the divisions at the Department of Laboratory Medicine. BCM provides the facilities needed for cell - molecular biology research and the possibility to perform research in vivo. With its particular position at the interface between basic science and clinical application, BCM has a unique opportunity to translate progress in biomedical research into new methods and principles for diagnosing and treating diseases.
In this role, you will play a key part in advancing our research on in situ engineered extracellular vesicle–mediated delivery of therapeutics for neurodegenerative disorders. You will help to identify disease-relevant targets and gain hands-on experience across the full pipeline of AAV and EV production.
This means yourwill be involved in a wide range of lab techniques, including molecular cloning, cell culture, extracellular vesicle and AAV production and purification, flow cytometry, protein analysis (Western blot, enzymatic activity assay), RNA expression analysis (RT-qPCR and dPCR) and microscopy images processing. Importantly, you will carry out animal experiments involving intravenous and stereotaxic injections, brain surgery, dissection and processing of the animal samples. Beyond the bench, you will also carry out literature research to uncover new therapeutic opportunities.
We are looking for you with a background in molecular biology and strong experience in mouse work. It is required that you have practical laboratory experience in the following areas: mainly experience in cloning, cell culture, EV / AAV production and mouse brain surgery. Experience in the biochemistry field and with enzyme engineering is an advantage, but neither is a requirement. Candidates with experience in projects related to gene delivery will be considered. In addition, an excellent command of written and spoken English is essential.
As a person, we would like you to be a strong critical thinker and to fit in and actively contribute to the research team.
Scholarships at the undergraduate or graduate level are intended to provide students with early practical experience in research work in order to strengthen the link between education and research and to encourage continued studies at the graduate level. To be eligible for a scholarship, you must either be admitted (and registered in Ladok) to an undergraduate or graduate program at KI, or be admitted and registered to an undergraduate or graduate program at a university with which KI has a collaboration agreement.
Scholarships may be awarded either for studies within an existing program or for a shorter period of practical research experience for admitted students at the undergraduate or graduate level. The scholarship is intended for the recipient’s education and is tax-free. The scholarship amount is paid out monthly.
