The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2025 of 580 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.
The Division of Neurogeriatrics consists of about 65 employees. The division conducts experimental and translational research related primarily to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, but also more general molecular mechanisms with biomedical relevance are studied. The division is mainly located in BioClinicum, KI Campus Solna, and partially in Neo, KI Campus Flemingsberg.
Our group at the Division of Neurogeriatrics, Karolinska Institutet, study how mitochondrial function and dynamics influence early disease mechanisms in Alzheimer’s disease. Our team combines advanced cell biology, super-resolution imaging, and in vitro and in vivo models to better understand how brain energy metabolism fails during neurodegeneration. By joining our group, you will gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge neuroscience research in an international and collaborative environment.
The position is a full-time fixed-term employment for two years, with a possibility of extension.
This project aims to generate a spatially resolved map of mitochondrial functions, network organization, and dynamics in a 3D model of Alzheimer’s disease. Our ambition is to identify key events that regulate and precede mitochondrial decay during neurodegeneration.
The project combines 2D and 3D cell culture systems, confocal and super-resolution live imaging microscopy, high-resolution respirometry, and deep learning-based image analysis. You will be involved in experimental work, data analysis, supervision of junior researchers, and grant writing, while contributing to the collaborative scientific environment of the group.
We are seeking a highly motivated and team-oriented postdoctoral researcher with a background in neuroscience and a strong interest in mitochondrial biology. The successful candidate must have documented experience in advanced fluorescence imaging, including confocal and/or super-resolution microscopy of mitochondria and other relevant organelles such as lipid droplets and lysosomes. Experience with primary neural cultures, brain organoid systems, and image analysis is essential. Strong computational and coding skills are also essential, particularly for microscopy image analysis and handling large datasets. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R is expected, and experience with deep learning–based image analysis approaches is highly desirable.
The candidate is expected to work independently, perform experiments and data analysis, and actively contribute to the scientific development of the group. Participation in supervision and collaborative projects is also expected.
Training in laboratory animal science according to FELASA guidelines (or equivalent) is required. Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
