Do you want to work with cryo-electron microscopy and biophysics, supported by skilled and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Would you like an employer that invests in sustainable employment practices and offers secure and favorable working conditions? Welcome to apply for the position of Researcher at Uppsala University.
The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is organized into seven research programmes which all focus on different areas of cell and molecular biology: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Evolution, Molecular Systems Biology and Structural Biology. The scientific basis of what we do lies in biology, but our research overlaps with other areas such as medicine, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, engineering sciences and physics. In total, we are over 200 staff and ~60 Ph.D. students. Please read more about the department’s work at https://www.uu.se/en/department/cell-and-molecular-biology.
Cryo-EM Uppsala is a facility for high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) at ICM that provides instrumentation for sample preparation and data collection of single-particle samples for determination of three-dimensional structures of macromolecules (SPA), as well as computational clusters for data analysis. Cryo-EM Uppsala plans to implement instrumentation for cryo-tomography in the near future. The facility provides user support for projects, as well as training for new users. Cryo-EM Uppsala also offers a graduate-level course, Introduction to Cryo-EM (3 hp) that runs annually. Cryo-EM Uppsala is operated by ICMs Structural Biology program and is led by co-directors Anna Sundborger-Lunna and Marco Marcia, and facility manager and technical expert Daniel Larsson.
Cryo-EM Uppsala is an important node within a new Faculty of Science and Technology-funded center for studies of macromolecular structural dynamics, which aims to create a strong platform for advanced methods in structure determination and biophysical characterization. The candidate is therefore expected to work in close collaboration with experts within this center and should be well acquainted with methods complementary to cryo-EM.
Duties
The candidate is expected to participate in all activities at Cryo-EM Uppsala, including structure determination projects, teaching, and maintenance of instrumentation.
Recquirements
PhD in structural biology, biophysics, or a related field, as well as extensive experience (minimum three years) in experimental structure determination of macromolecules using cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography, and SAXS/SANS. Experience with data collection at synchrotron- and high-end cryo-EM facilities. Extensive experience in sample preparation for the above methods, including protein expression and purification (in different systems), as well as various characterization methods including size-exclusion chromatography, mass photometry, ITC, and CD. Extensive experience working collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams where effective communication is essential. Excellent written and spoken English skills. Strong ability to document and communicate scientific results. Excellent ability to independently initiate and lead projects.
Additional qualifications
Extensive experience in preparation of lipid-related samples, e.g., nanodiscs and membrane proteins.
About the employment
The employment is a temporary position, 12 months. Scope of employment is 100%. Starting date August 2026 or as agreed. Location: Uppsala.
