The European Spallation Source (ESS) will soon be the world’s most powerful source of neutrons, providing researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science.
The ESS Science Directorate invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow position in the Diffraction & Imaging Division. The Diffraction and Imaging Division is home to the instrument scientists and instrument operations engineers working on designing, constructing, and operating the DREAM, MAGiC, BEER, HEIMDAL, ODIN, and TBL beamlines. This position is associated with the powder diffractometer DREAM.
About the role:
ESS is searching for an engaged and motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to work within the Diffraction & Imaging Division. The work will be focused on experimental studies of novel nanoparticle electrode materials for Li/Na-ion batteries. In particular, the correlation between crystal structure/morphology of nanoparticles and battery performance will be studied by a combination of neutron powder diffraction (NPD), neutron pair-distribution function (nPDF), and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements. Design of the experiments, data reduction, and data analysis are essential responsibilities for this position.
Day-to-day, you will:
- Prepare and participate in NPD, nPDF and SANS experiments at ESS and other facilities
- Contribute to the development and commissioning of the electrochemical cell at the DREAM instrument
- Travel to partner institutions to collaborate on data analysis and cell design
- Document and communicate results through clear notes, reports, and presentations
- Present results at national and international conferences
Essential qualifications:
- PhD, within the subjects of physics, material science, or chemistry
- Hands-on experience in NPD and nPDF measurements
- Solid foundation in crystallography
- Demonstrated ability to conduct high‑impact research, evidenced by publications in peer‑reviewed journals and/or presentations at scientific conferences
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently
- Good interpersonal communication and presentation skills
- Flexibility to requests to work out-of-hours
- Responsible attitude to personal safety and the safety of others
- Willingness and availability to travel internationally
- Excellent oral and written English skills
Desirable experience:
- Experience with the software for diffraction data analysis (GSAS/FullProf, PDFgui, RMCprofile)
- Experience with time-of-flight neutron scattering
- Experience in designing sample environment equipment for neutron scattering experiments
Duration & Location
The position is a fixed term role for about 3 years and the workplace will be situated in Lund (Sweden), with frequent travels to Uppsala and Essen.
