At the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, you'll join a dedicated animal care team using modern facilities, technologies and best‑practice standards to support vital research into heart disease.
As an Animal Technician, you'll play an essential role in the daily care and wellbeing of animals housed within BioCORE, predominantly working with rodents, with some involvement in aquatic species such as zebrafish and frogs. You'll contribute to the smooth operation of our animal facilities by delivering consistent, high‑quality husbandry and supporting research activities alongside experienced colleagues.
This is a permanent, full‑time onsite role working across a 6‑day rotating roster, which includes some weekends and public holidays to ensure continuity of care.
- Providing professional daily animal care, including feeding, watering and maintaining clean housing
- Delivering high‑quality animal husbandry, including breeding and colony management
- Supporting animal health and welfare through routine monitoring and accurate recordkeeping
- Operating and maintaining washing, sterilising and facility equipment
- Maintaining clean, compliant animal rooms, procedure areas and equipment
- Liaising with researchers to support optimal animal care under approved protocols
- Assisting with animal handling, issuance and research procedures under guidance
- Upholding compliance with animal ethics, gene technology, quarantine and WHS requirements
- Perform euthanasia, as required.
- You're enthusiastic, motivated and genuinely care about animal welfare
- You have completed, are close to completing, or are studying towards a qualification in animal science, animal technology, animal care, biological science, vet nursing or a related field
- Experience (or strong interest) in working within an animal research or laboratory setting
- Comfortable working both independently and as part of a collaborative team
- Strong attention to detail and are confident using electronic record systems
- Ability to communicate clearly and build positive working relationships with diverse stakeholders
- Comfortable working with rodents and small animals and approach this work with care and professionalism
- Available to work weekends and public holidays as part of a rotating roster
