Duties
The turbulent fluxes across the air-sea-ice interface in the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ), ie, the transitional area between open water and pack ice, are crucial for polar weather, ecosystem, and climate on both local and global scales. The presence of sea ice floes, varying from centimeters to hundreds of kilometers in size, creates an exceptionally heterogeneous surface characterized by varying roughness and temperature profiles. These characteristics significantly affect the momentum and heat fluxes across the air-sea-ice interface, and other processes. Despite this significance, our understanding of the turbulent fluxes across the interface in the MIZ remains fragmented and poorly represented in prevailing weather and climate models.
The postdoctoral project will focus on:
- implementing new turbulent parameterizations for the marginal ice zone (MIZ) into Earth system models (regional or global), and
- assessing the impact of MIZ processes on polar extreme cyclones and their broader implications for polar climate.
Requirements

PhD degree in atmospheric or oceanic sciences, or a closely related field or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in above field. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Priority will be given to applicants who have completed their degree no more than three years before the deadline for applications. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Proven experience in numerical modelling, including tools such as WRF, EC-Earth, and/or sea-ice models.

Strong skills in scientific programming and computational modeling.

Ability to conduct independent research while contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary and international research team.
Additional qualifications
Proficiency in a Linux/Unix environment, together with strong expertise in Python and Bash scripting, is highly desirable.
