We are seeking a candidate for a full-time permanent position as Senior Lecturer in Practical Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy at Lund University.
The Department of Philosophy, with a staff of about 70, is divided into Practical Philosophy, Theoretical Philosophy and Cognitive Science. It is a research-intensive department that understands the importance of having knowledgeable and committed teaching staff and offering its 250 students programmes and courses of the highest quality. Research in practical philosophy at Lund University has long attracted attention internationally for its output, particularly in value theory, philosophy of action and social ontology, theory of law and moral responsibility. On the education side, the focus is on morals (moral philosophy, metaethics, applied ethics, theory of law), politics (political philosophy), practical rationality (action theory, decision theory) as well as aesthetics and philosophy of religion. Within practical philosophy, advanced level courses are offered that provide an opportunity for specialisation in the main field of study for a Master’s degree (60/120 credits). Since 2014, a popular undergraduate programme in Practical Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) has been offered in cooperation with the Department of Political Science and the Department of Economics.

The successful candidate will conduct teaching, research and supervision in practical philosophy and strive, in collaboration with the department’s other staff members, to further develop the education and research environment. The position of senior lecturer involves teaching in the first, second and third cycles, as well as the supervision of students in the second cycle and doctoral students in practical philosophy. The position may also involve being responsible for the PPE programme and having internal and/or external assignments and positions of trust. Other duties such as administrative work may also be included. Furthermore, the successful candidate is to actively seek external research funding.

A doctoral degree in Practical Philosophy or the corresponding research competence or other professional expertise that is valuable for the post’s subject matter and duties.

Demonstrated teaching expertise.

Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education of at least five weeks or equivalent knowledge and expertise acquired in other ways. If there are valid reasons, for example that you have lacked opportunities to acquire the requisite knowledge in your former positions, an appointment can still be made. In such cases, you are to complete the required training within the first two years of employment.

Well-documented ability to teach in Swedish. If such proficiency is lacking, the appointment may nevertheless be made. In such cases, the appointee shall acquire this proficiency within two years from the date of appointment, enabling them thereafter to undertake administrative and teaching duties that require a good command of Swedish.

Well-documented proficiency in spoken and written academic English.

Good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for
international experience is to be assessed with consideration given to the character and traditions of the subject. -
Good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.

Ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a doctoral degree.

Ability to cooperate with wider society and communicate their activities.

Good general ability to lead and develop activities.
Teaching and research merits shall be weighted equally. Personal qualities relevant to the performance of the duties shall also be taken into account.

Documented experience of research in at least one of the following areas: metaethics (including value theory), moral philosophy, and political philosophy.

Documented ability to secure external research funding.

Documented broad teaching competence in practical philosophy at all levels of education (undergraduate, advanced and doctoral levels).

Documented teaching competence in metaethics (including value theory) and/or political philosophy.

Documented experience of supervising students at advanced level and at doctoral level, leading to the award of a degree.

The Department of Philosophy has about 80 employees. Research and education at the department is conducted within three subjects: Cognitive science, Practical philosophy and Theoretical philosophy.
