The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2025 of 580 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.
Aging Research Center (ARC), a division within NVS, is located at KI Campus Solna, Stockholm. It is a multidisciplinary academic environment, representing medicine (e.g., neurology, epidemiology, psychiatry, geriatrics), psychology (e.g., cognition, structural, functional, and molecular brain imaging), and social gerontology (e.g., sociology, public health, social epidemiology, social work). The center has around 60 employees, it has a strong focus on research with unique research resources, such as large-scale longitudinal studies and nationwide registries.
National E-infrastructure for Aging Research (NEAR)
Karolinska Institutet and five other Swedish Universities are building a National E-infrastructure for Aging Research (NEAR) with the ultimate scope to facilitate aging research in Sweden, foster international collaboration, and enhance the quality and impact of scientific research. Ultimately, by empowering aging research in Sweden, NEAR will contribute to identifying sustainable intervention strategies that will help to achieve better health and care for elderly people. NEAR consists of 15 databases derived from longitudinal cohort studies located in different geographical areas in Sweden.
The Research Specialist will play a central role in the scientific coordination, operation, and continued development of NEAR. The position requires a combination of expertise from research infrastructure, scientific expertise in longitudinal aging research, project coordination, scientific development, and scientific communication.
The Research Specialist will work closely with the NEAR Director, representatives of participating universities and databases, researchers, funding bodies, administrative and legal functions, and other national and international research infrastructures. The main responsibilities include:

Coordinating scientific and operational activities within NEAR in collaboration with participating universities, database representatives, and researchers.

Contributing to the strategic development of NEAR, including needs assessments, planning of future infrastructure activities and dialogue with national and international stakeholders.

Coordinating externally funded research and infrastructure projects, including grant applications, planning, deliverables, and reporting.

Supporting the Director of NEAR in scientific, strategic, and operational matters.

Coordinating and preparing steering group meetings, scientific workshops, conferences, and other strategic activities.

Developing and coordinating national and international collaborations with researchers, universities, and other research infrastructures.

Contributing to the coordination of data-related processes within NEAR, including data harmonization, quality assurance, documentation, research ethics, data governance and data-transfer procedures in collaboration with relevant scientific, legal and administrative functions.

Promoting the scientific use and visibility of NEAR through scientific communication, reports, presentations, meetings, and other dissemination activities.

Providing scientific and methodological support to researchers using longitudinal population-based data and facilitating collaboration across NEAR databases.

Contributing to research within aging, with particular emphasis on cognitive aging and dementia, using longitudinal population-based data.

Initiating and contributing to scientific studies, including the formulation of research questions, statistical analyses, interpretation of results, and preparation of scientific publications.

Contributing, where relevant, to supervision and teaching within areas related to aging research and quantitative research methods.

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented postdoctoral research experience.
We are looking for an experienced and motivated researcher who combines a strong background in aging research with documented experience of working within large-scale research infrastructures. You should have the experience of coordinating scientific activities involving multiple research groups, databases, or organizations and be comfortable working at the interface between research, infrastructure development and research administration.
In addition, the successful candidate should have scientific expertise relevant to NEAR's research activities, particularly within cognitive aging and their relationship with dementia and other age-related health outcomes.

A doctoral degree in psychology, epidemiology, public health, medical science or another field relevant to aging research.

Several years of relevant research experience beyond doctoral training.

Documented experience of working within a national or international research infrastructure, or another large-scale collaborative research environment involving multiple research groups, databases, or organizations.

Experience of coordinating scientific or infrastructure-related activities involving researchers and stakeholders from different organizations or universities.

Scientific expertise in aging research, with relevance to cognitive decline, dementia or related age-associated outcomes.

Experience of research using large-scale longitudinal population-based data.

Experience of coordinating or contributing substantially to external research funding.

Experience of coordinating complex, multidisciplinary research projects and scientific activities.

Advanced knowledge of quantitative research methods and statistical software, such as Stata or R.

Demonstrated ability to communicate research through scientific publications and presentations.

Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Swedish.
The position also requires a high degree of independence, initiative, and organizational ability, as well as the capacity to manage several parallel activities and collaborate with researchers and stakeholders from different disciplines and organizations.
