Do you want to contribute to improving human health?
The Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery conducts both preclinical and clinical research across a wide range of medical fields, including Clinical Genetics. The research groups in Clinical Genetics are based at BioClinicum in Solna.
Over the past 10 years, studies on genetic diseases have undergone rapid development, driven by new opportunities in both genetic diagnostics and treatment. This progress has not only improved our ability to diagnose genetic diseases at an earlier stage but also opened the door to more personalized treatment strategies. Thanks to advancements in genetics, we now have a much greater understanding of the various mechanisms underlying a range of genetically caused diseases.
Given the increased scope and expanded focus in this field, we are now establishing a combined position as professor in Clinical Genetics and Genomics. We are looking for a dedicated and knowledgeable individual who wants to be part of our department and contribute to strengthening our work in research, diagnostics, and treatment of genetic diseases.
The rapid development in the field of Clinical Genetics encompasses both rare inherited diseases and acquired genetic conditions. In Sweden, around half a million people live with a rare disease, and globally, the number rises to as high as 350 million. More than 70% of these conditions have a genetic cause, making the field highly relevant for both clinical care and research. In order to provide better conditions for people with rare diseases, it is crucial to offer early and accurate diagnostics, as well as equal access to care and treatment.
For this to become a reality, research on rare diseases is required, particularly in the areas of diagnostics and treatment. By developing new diagnostic methods and treatment options, we can provide these patients with a better quality of life and the opportunity for more targeted and effective care.
In addition to rare diseases, the field also includes acquired genetic conditions, with cancer being one of the most prominent examples. Here, genetic diagnostics play a central role in understanding disease mechanisms, identifying potential biomarkers, and developing more effective treatments.
This position offers the opportunity to be part of a dynamic and forward-looking research environment, where you will play a central role in developing and implementing new methods and strategies to address future challenges in Clinical Genetics and Genomics.
We are looking for an experienced specialist in Clinical Genetics who conducts high-level international research within the field. You will also further develop the field through close collaboration with colleagues in academia and healthcare, both locally, nationally, and internationally. The position includes the responsibility to develop education in Clinical Genetics, teach in the undergraduate medical program, and actively participate in research education and specialist training in Clinical Genetics.
