The Department of Law invites applications for a post-doctoral position in Law and Information Technology, funded within the research program The Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program – Humanity and Society (WASP-HS). The post-doctoral student will be employed by the Department of Law.
The Department of Law is one of the larger departments at Stockholm University, with approximately 150 employees and around 5,500 students. More than 100 faculty members are engaged full-time in teaching and conducting the research on which the education is based. Around forty professors with different areas of legal specialization are affiliated with the department. The position is affiliated to the national research program WASP-HS and the research cluster The Rule of AI - AI, Regulation, and Society. The vision of WASP-HS is to foster novel interdisciplinary knowledge in the humanities and social sciences about AI and autonomous systems and their impact on human and social development. WASP-HS enables cutting-edge research, expertise, and competence building in the humanities and social sciences.
The research cluster is led by Uppsala University, Örebro University, and Stockholm University and studies how AI transforms regulatory processes, focusing on the design of, oversight over and compliance with rules (www.oru.se/english/research/research-groups/rg/?rdb=g481). The post-doctoral researcher will be part of the cluster and be placed at the Department of Law at Stockholm University but will design and conduct their post-doctoral project independently.
A post-doctoral student must primarily devote his or her time to his or her own post-doctoral research (3 years full-time). Other duties may be included, such as teaching students, working in teaching teams, and administration (no more than 20% of the position).
In order to qualify for a Postdoctoral position, applicants are required to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent relevant degree from another country. The degree must have been completed no later than when the employment decision is made.
It is considered an advantage if the doctoral degree or an equivalent degree was completed no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Under special circumstances, an older degree may also be an advantage. Special circumstances refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, civil defense service, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.
Fellows must have received a doctoral degree in a Social Sciences or Humanities subject (SCB: 501-509, 601-603, 60407-60410, 605) no more than three years before the application deadline for the postdoctoral position.
Applicants must have adequate knowledge of Swedish or English.
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. Admission is based on an evaluation of the applicant’s capacity to successfully complete the post-doctoral project. The evaluation is primarily focused on the project description as well as other relevant scientific written material (published or not published). Written scientific materials which are not in law will also be meritorious to the extent that it is relevant to the project. Analytical ability, the ability to structure the material and to independently work on the proposed project, and the project’s scientific value, are paramount. In addition to the written material, other merits, such as grades, diplomas, completed courses, etc., may also be of importance in the assessment. Further, the applicant’s capacity to cooperate in different ways, e.g. with teaching, may be taken into consideration. It is considered a merit to have practical and/or theoretical experience in the field of law and information technology, particularly in relation to AI.
The position is full-time and for a period of three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. The starting date is 1 January 2027 or as otherwise agreed.
