Job Overview
We are looking for a highly technical Systems/Platform Engineer to strengthen our Private Cloud team. In this role, you will apply software engineering principles to IT operations, building automated tooling and resilient infrastructure to ensure our large-scale systems stay highly available, fast and scalable.
You will take ownership of the Kubernetes clusters and VMs running in our on-prem cloud, designing, implementing, and maintaining robust solutions across the estate. Your goal is to eliminate manual operational "toil," maximize automation, and ensure the high availability and performance of our applications.
We view our infrastructure as a product and the development teams as our customers. We are looking for a systems engineer who builds with empathy, enjoys being a helpful technical partner, and focuses on enabling others rather than acting as a gatekeeper.
As part of a small, senior, and deeply technical team, you will occupy a central role—collaborating closely with Development, Hosting- and Network Infrastructure, GCP, and AWS teams in a dynamic, agile environment. We value curiosity, patience, and a constructive attitude. We believe that no question is too basic to deserve a helpful answer.
The Environment & Tooling
We believe that "if DevOps is the philosophy, SRE/Systems Engineering is the implementation."
Our stack is modern, complex, and heavily rooted in Open Source software:
- Infrastructure: Private Cloud, Virtualization, Containerization
- OS & Orchestration: Linux, Flatcar, Kubernetes (CAPI)
- Data & Messaging: SQL, NoSQL, Columnar Databases, Distributed Keystores, Messaging Services
- CI/CD & Automation: Ansible, Flux, Helm, Terraform, Github Actions
Core Responsibilities
- Infrastructure Design & Architecture: Architect and deploy resilient on-premise and cloud-based applications. Contribute to high-level architectural decisions to ensure infrastructure supports long-term growth and technical reliability.
- Extending Kubernetes via custom operators/controllers or API integrations.
- Automation & Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Embrace the "everything as code" philosophy. Write code to automate provisioning, deployment, and routine tasks using tools like Ansible and Terraform to manage fleets of servers efficiently.
- Incident Management & Security: Take a proactive role in vulnerability management (patching and hardening). Investigate production issues, triage major incidents, and participate in blameless postmortems to ensure continuous system evolution.
- Observability & Monitoring: Design and manage comprehensive monitoring and alerting solutions. Identify patterns in system behavior to preemptively address errors, track system health, and ensure maximum uptime.
- Capacity Planning & Support: Forecast infrastructure needs, perform load/disaster recovery testing, and partner with cross-functional engineering teams to translate complex infrastructure needs into actionable plans.
Key Skills & Qualifications
- Background: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or equivalent experience, with 5–10 years of relevant experience in production environments.
- Operating Systems: Solid, deep understanding of Linux operating system internals (networking, storage, systemd, namespaces) and robust Linux scripting capabilities.
- Containers & Orchestration: Solid understanding of Cloud-native operations using Kubernetes (including Cluster API/CAPI, Helm, Flux, and Flatcar).
- Programming: Proficiency in building and maintaining tools in Go (or strong proficiency in languages like Python, Java, or Ruby with a willingness to use Go).
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Proven experience with configuration and change management using Ansible, Terraform, or equivalent tools.
- Data Systems: Experience in basic database troubleshooting and management of MySQL, Cassandra, NoSQL, and Columnar databases (analyzing logs, managing processes).
- Soft Skills:
- Self-motivated and detail-oriented with a process-driven mindset.
- Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively across diverse technical domains.
- A strong service-oriented mindset: you find genuine satisfaction in unblocking colleagues and helping other teams succeed.
- Empathy and active listening: the ability to translate a developer's frustration into a constructive platform improvement.
Growth Opportunities
This role provides an excellent platform for professional development within a cutting-edge technical environment. You will have the unique chance to:
- Work on high-impact projects that directly affect our core application estate.
- Learn from and collaborate with senior infrastructure architects.
- Master the tools and methodologies that define modern site reliability and systems engineering.
- Enjoy a fun, helpful, and challenging team culture that actively supports your technical deep-dives and continuous learning.
